West Bay Elementary School
International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program World School
West Bay is a united learning community. This means students, staff and parents are all actively engaged in the learning process. Each individual student is appreciated for his/her individual learning style and teachers strive to differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of all learners. The staff model life-long learning as they share their enthusiasm and passion for continuously learning themselves through IB training, professional development and Masters programs.
The school has been an authorized IB World School since August, 2007. The students’ sense of wonder and curiosity are nurtured through inq
uiry-based learning. Questioning, open-mindedness, critical thinking and perseverance are a focus. In this student-centered approach, the development of the whole child is addressed by paying attention to, not only the academics (through the school-wide Program of Inquiry), but also the physical, aesthetic and social/emotional dimensions of child development.
West Bay is conscientiously preparing students of the informational age by using laptop technology as an integrative tool. Research skills are part of the everyday curriculum as students create knowledge and attempt to solve real-life problems. Technology, acts as a tool, as students make global connections. International-mindedness is always at the core of our learning.
West Bay students are encouraged to work towards becoming socially responsible in their learning community. The students learn and practice attitudes that encourage character building (appreciation, commitment, confidence, cooperation, creativity, curiosity, empathy, enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect, and tolerance) and are taught to reflect and self-assess. They are taught peaceful ways through restorative action to solve their problems. All West Bay students are expected to interact with one another considerately.
Learning a second language is a key element in this enriched environment. Students realize that part of knowing and understanding another’s culture is through communication. Students learn to read, speak, write and gesture in French, beginning at the Kindergarten level.
West Bay’s parent body enjoys open communication with the school and is welcomed to actively participate. Parents provide immeasurable support to the school and are involved in shared decision-making of pertinent issues. There is a strong partnership between home and the school at this site.
West Bay is a school that wants to show accountability to continuous improvement. The goals of the annual “Action Plan for Student Learning” ensure that student learning is being tracked and improvements are being made. As well, the standards of the IBO hold the school accountable for:
- motivated, happy learners;
- students who are learning how to learn;
- learners who can apply critical analysis skills;
- children who take risks to seek deeper understanding of concepts with global significance, and
- students that are involved in responsible action and social service.
