It took 11 rounds until GE crowned its Spelling Bee champion on Monday, January 23rd, 2012. Speller Number 6 and grade six student, Anna G., was the only student standing after successfully spelling h-a-r-m-o-n-i-o-u-s. In all, 30 students from grades 4 to 7 competed in the first annual GE BEE. Five representatives from each of our six intermediate classes took to the stage testing their knowledge of words from the 2012 Canspell Study Guide.
eventual champ, Anna G.
Tension seeped into the auditorium as Anna and runner up, Lucas W., battled it out for top speller honours. Starting at 1 pm the students paraded into the gym with their numbered placards ready to test their wits in this friendly competition. The audience, consisting of intermediate students, grade 3's who will be eligible next year, staff and proud parents watched with anticipation as the number of spellers whittled down. In fact, we had to dismiss the classes because we ran out of time. It took one round after the bell at 2:40 to finally announce our winner.

Anna is now eligible to compete in the Vancouver Canspell Regional finals which will be held on March 10th at the Chan Centre at UBC. Anna must first qualify by completing a 60 word spelling test which is submitted to Canspell organizers. We wish Anna the 'beest' of luck.
